Privacy

WHAT ARE COOKIES?

Cookies are small strings of text that are sent to the user’s terminal (usually the browser) when you visit a website. They are stored on the user computer and transmitted to the same sites the next time you visit it. When browsing a website, you can receive on your Terminal even cookies that are sent by different web sites or servers (the so-called “third parties”), which may host some of the elements (such as images, maps, sounds, links to specific pages on other domains) that are on the site you are visiting.
Cookies, usually found in a user’s browser in a very large number and sometimes with characteristics of long persistence in time, are used for different purposes: authentication, monitoring sessions, storing information on specific configurations relating to users who access the server, etc.

Cookies can be divided into two macro-categories: “technical”and”profiling” cookies.

TECHNICAL COOKIES

Technical cookies are used for the sole purpose of “transmitting a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary to the provider of a service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide this service” (see art. 122, paragraph 1 of the Data Protection Code).
They are not used for further purposes and are normally installed directly by the owner or operator of the web site. They can be divided into navigation cookies or session cookies, ensuring the normal navigation and use of the web site (for example allowing making a purchase or accessing reserved areas); analytics cookie, similar to technical cookies when used directly by the website manager to collect information, in aggregate, about the number of users and their behaviour visiting the website; function cookies, allowing users to navigate based on a selected set of criteria (e.g. language, selected products), in order to improve the service provided.

PROFILING COOKIES

Profiling cookies are designed to create users’ profiles and are used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user when browsing the web. Because such devices can intrude upon user’s private sphere considerably, European and Italian law provides that the user should be adequately informed about the use of these cookies and clearly accept them.

THIRD-PARTY COOKIES

These cookies are used by domains other than those indicated in the address bar of your browser, or by organizations that do not match the owners of the website.

For example, cookies used to collect information for advertising purposes and content customization, as well as to process web statistics, can be “third party cookies.”

Third-party cookies allow gathering more complete data about users’ browsing habits and are believed to be more sensitive in terms of integrity. This is why, most web browsers allow you to change the settings so that cookies are not accepted.
